"Do you know what their cancer survival rates are?" I'm guessing pretty good compared to ours since they can actually afford the treatment. Here, I think cancer survival rates are basically proportionate to bank account size.

Ellipses said...

More of them probably die of cancer because they live 3-5 years longer...

In a country where no one lives past age 60, you don't have a whole lot of altzheimer's

God that woman is pure evil.

Thank the Lord Jesus that we have someone like Al Franken fighting for us in the Senate.

We need more like him.

Again, I'm likin' Mr. Franken!

Who's the chick in the background? She's hot.

Oscar said...

screw the doctor. who the heck is the woman behind al franken???

Anonymous said...

Who is the beautiful woman over Al Franken's shoulder in the glasses? My god man. This debate is interesting and all, but look at that woman!

I see the redditors decided to comment on the chick behind franken

So...easily survivable cancer is easily not survived in other countries where government health care is the norm? what is his point? He was never a very good comedian and an even worse legislative member. Kind of more like a game show host. This clown won't last more than one term.

Anonymous said...

Larry, I don't know how this simple implication escaped you but given that you're probably conservative I'm not surprised. Franken was implying that our country's cancer survival "rates" are higher because we are bolstering our survival statistics by rolling easily survivable cancer rates into the overall survival rate. Whereas other countries with universal care, where people are ALSO surviving less serious cancers, are not including them in their overall survival statistic.

You are exactly whats wrong with this country and the voting populous and politics in general. When you are presented with clear, concise, fact supported information you still can't figure out what's going on, much less what's being said.

Anonymous said...

Anonymous, you nailed the comment by Larry on head. Saved me from having to try to explain it to him. Well Said.

Anonymous said...

Cosign. Anonny up there just saved me some time with that great rebuttal to Larry's ignorant little comment. I wish we had a Canadian equivalent to Al Franken up here.

Sen. Al Franken, you sir are one of the few politicians that I actually respect. If only more were like you.

Please good sir, never sell out!

Unknown said...

Instead of thanking some mythological fantastic entity, I think it is more appropriate instead to thank the voters who elected Mr. Franken.

Anonymous said...

We need more senators from SNL. Obviously SNL is a breeding ground for smart politicians.

Anonymous said...

When the fuck is somebody gonna tell us who the hot chick is?

Alex Toronto said...

That girl in the back is beautiful.

Anonymous said...

Isn't relativism funny? All these guys in here going on about the "hot" girl behind Al. A girl who's actually pretty plain (and sort of mannish....she looks like my ex-husband in drag). But surrounded by a bunch of old fuddyduddies, suddenly she's drool worthy. Well, I guess anything to avoid actually having to listen and pay attention to the issue at hand. LOL

"Duh, I don't have that number, but I can get it for you."

"Yeah, the number is zero."

Man, it's great that guy worked so hard to get in as a representative of the great state of MN. Brilliant guy. This is how *every* one of our representatives should be acting - for the people's interest.
Not out the back door, asking the softball questions, and getting their hands greased.

Oscar said...

first of all, about the chick and people not paying attention to the issues.... some of us can multitask. Second. Franken is right on the money. Because of the emphasis in the US on early detection, which is good, and for-profit medical institutions, which is bad, there is a greater rate in the US of detecting early non-metastasizing cancers. In countries with socialized medicine, there is a great emphasis in prioritizing those with severe medical conditions over those considered less serious. Such as, conditions that will not harm the patient are less of a concern. In the end, it comes down to the definition of 'cancer' and 'curing' it and how different countries aggregate their data. As the one of the previous anonymous poster pointed out, the US seems better at it simply because it lists down all those non-metastasizing cancers as 'cured'.
Three, how is a public option going to make things worse for those with cancer??? Is the effectiveness of the treatment diminished because it is payed by the government instead of out of pocket?
Four, considering the obesity rates in this country and a plethora of health issues, cancer is not the only reason that can burn a hole in your pocket.

p.s. repost, i'm an idiot and didn't re-read what i wrote before posting.

That was awesome. It makes me feel like paying attention to politics again.

I love this guy. I loved him on SNL for many years and now I love watching him play the Senate.

I'm an American in France, for over 20 years now, who (unfortunately) went through the full cancer treatment (surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy). It didn't cost me an additional Euro in addition to what I already pay in taxes and social charges. Four years later I am helping to boost France's cancer survival rate statistics. In America I would most likely have died either to save my family to money necessary to pay for such medical treatment or because I would be unwilling to sell my house to do so.

Our cancer survival rates are actually pretty wonderful and I know where I'm glad to be getting my health care from. I know I pay a lot in taxes and in social charges. But I know I, like everyone else, get a lot back for that money and I don't complain.

Medecine is extremely big business in America. It's going to take

You can actually compare the number of cancer deaths quite easily on www.gapminder.com
Just check Gapminder World and choose health/cance type/male deaths for instance and check the countries of interest in the right panel list.

Jesus, e, where did you reddit this to?

Irukandji said...

Anyone who is speaking against health reform to congress should have to show where they're making all their money. We're not going to beat these clowns into submission unless we start targeting their pawns when they speak out. We need details on this "woman's" personal life so we can protest her on an individual level.

Ellipses said...

I put it in the super-awesome subreddit...

jedipunk said...

My response to her question, "Do you know we have better cancer survival rates?" would have been, "Do you know they have lower infant mortality rates and longer life expectancies? Brag about cancer survival after accomplishing thing likes bringing me alive in this world and keeping me here longer." Plus what he said.

J. Phillip Jones said...

Nonsense. Al is using his own cherry picking. The fact remains that if you have breast of prostate cancer, two of the most common worldwide, you're more likely to survive in the U.S. Also, the fact that that is true even though our population is so diverse and environment so varied compared to the little euro countries says something profound that Al misses. Al's in good form here, he sounds convincing, but he's putting on a show not having an honest discussion.

Cylinsier said...

Cancer survival rates doing really have anything to do with reform. There's no reason to assume they would be negatively affected by changes in the system. My cancer survival rate would be 0 because I wouldn't be able to afford the treatment if I got cancer now.

Franken reminds me of a professor sitting on a doctor designate's review committee. If you don't know the data, he will give it to you, and if you can't put it into the context on the spot, he will (as my chairman put it) "take you apart." Trying to wriggle out or shoot comments back that do not address the topic or the context will only make things more painful and embarrassing.

Tom said...

The problem with the USA is that they believe everything they hear on their controlled TV.

If you have never had the benefit of living where everyone is covered under a government sponsored medical plan you don't know the advantage over the high health cost of the USA.

On your TV you hear that you have to #1 health care in the world when in reality you rank close to #40.

You are only #1 in money spent per citizen thereby making the medical establishment rich.

In the USA you never hear the words preventive and cure, only treatment. Treatment is where the profits are.

In every country except the USA the # 1 priority is placed on prevention.

Anonymous said...

Franken makes an ass of himself. This is painful to watch. That aside, we need more of the conversation preceding the snippet here to make any kind of educated comment on his poorly-articulated comments and rude interruptions. (Regardless of the topic at hand.)

Cylinsier said...

Sounds like something a Republican would say.

--- said...

Paul Krugman from the NYT wrote Obama's health care plan is just like a Swiss plan or a Massachusetts (Mitt Romney) plan with a public option. Krugman thinks that's a good thing, and the best we can do since we didn't start out with a public plan to begin with http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/17/opinion/17krugman.html

Wendel Potter, former head of PR for Cigna, said that's what the insurance companies have been after all along. They offer to give up pre-existing condition denial, and enrollment denial in exchange for everyone being required to buy a health insurance policy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7QwX_soZ1GI

If everyone is required to buy a corporate policy, why would you have a pre-existing condition issue, and enrollment denial?

This is a farce. This is what the health insurance companies are fighting for.

What we're getting is a corporatized health care system.

The Republicans have created a diversion from what's really going on by saying all this crap about death panels http://www.snopes.com/politics/medical/euthanasia.asp and a "Socialist takeover of our health care system."

I officially cant hold out for this smart phone, just 2 days remaining and I simply hope I could get my hands on one,. I have been reading a lot about the Android two.2 update that can come in August, simply another reason to be psyched about this excellent phone. Motorola and Verizon say they will update the phone to Android 2.2 late summer. It will certainly be an over-the-air update. However out-of-the box on its July 15 launch it will probably have Android 2.1.
